Eye Injections (Intravitreal Injections)

Eye injections, also known as intravitreal injections, are a highly effective method of delivering medication directly into the eye — specifically into the vitreous cavity at the back of the eye. These injections are used to treat a variety of retinal and macular diseases that may cause vision loss if left untreated.

At Shreya Eye Centre, under the expert care of Dr. Rakesh Gupta, we offer safe, precise, and advanced eye injection treatments to help preserve and restore vision for our patients.

When Are Eye Injections Recommended?

Eye injections are recommended for several sight-threatening retinal conditions, such as:

  • Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) – especially the wet type

  • Diabetic Retinopathy and Diabetic Macular Edema

  • Retinal Vein Occlusion

  • Choroidal Neovascular Membranes

  • Uveitis

  • Endophthalmitis (Severe eye infections)

These conditions can cause leakage, swelling, bleeding, or the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the retina — leading to vision loss.

Symptoms That May Require Eye Injections

  1. If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, you may be a candidate for eye injections:

    1. Blurred or distorted central vision

    2. 2. Sudden or gradual vision loss

    3. 3. Black or gray spots in your vision

    4. 4. Swelling in or around the retina

    5. 5. Visual disturbances or floaters

Early treatment can significantly improve outcomes and help prevent permanent vision damage.

Types of Eye Injections

Several medications are administered through intravitreal injections. Depending on your condition, Dr. Rakesh Gupta may recommend:

  • Anti-VEGF Injections
    (e.g., Avastin, Lucentis, Eylea)
To block abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage in AMD and diabetic retinopathy.

  • Steroid Injections
    (e.g., Ozurdex, Triamcinolone)
To reduce inflammation in retinal diseases like uveitis or macular edema.

  • Antibiotic or Antifungal Injections
For treating severe eye infections like endophthalmitis.

Each treatment plan is personalized for your eye condition, vision goals, and medical history.

The Procedure: What to Expect

Intravitreal injections are done in a sterile setting under local anesthesia. The procedure is quick and relatively painless.

Steps include:

  1. 1. The eye is numbed using anesthetic drops or gel.

  2. 2. Eyelids and surface are cleaned to prevent infection.

  3. 3. A tiny needle delivers medication into the back of the eye.

  4. 4. You may rest briefly after the injection and are monitored before leaving.

The entire process usually takes less than 30 minutes.
