About Intraocular Implants (IOLs)

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are artificial lenses that are surgically implanted in the eye to replace the eye’s natural lens when it has been removed during cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. IOLs restore vision and can even reduce dependence on glasses.

At Shreya Eye Centre, Dr. Rakesh Gupta offers advanced IOL options tailored to each patient’s visual needs and lifestyle, ensuring sharp vision and maximum comfort post-surgery.

When Are IOLs Needed?

IOLs are primarily implanted during the treatment of:

  • Cataracts – clouding of the natural lens, causing blurry or dull vision

  • Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) – for patients who wish to reduce dependency on glasses or contact lenses

  • Lens-related injuries or diseases – where the natural lens is damaged

Once the cloudy or damaged natural lens is removed, an IOL is implanted to restore clear vision.

Types of Intraocular Lenses (IOLs)

  1. At Shreya Eye Centre, we offer a range of premium IOLs to suit different vision needs:

    1. Monofocal IOLs
    • Provide clear vision at a single distance (usually far)

    • May still require glasses for reading or close work

    2. Multifocal IOLs
    • Offer clear vision at multiple distances – near, intermediate, and far

    • Reduce or eliminate the need for glasses

    3. Toric IOLs
    • Designed for patients with astigmatism

    • Correct both the cataract and astigmatism in one step

    4. Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs
    • Provide a continuous range of vision from far to intermediate with improved contrast

    5. Accommodative IOLs
    • Mimic the natural focusing ability of the eye by shifting position inside the eye

Dr. Rakesh Gupta will recommend the most suitable IOL based on your eye condition, lifestyle, and vision expectations.

The Procedure: How IOLs Are Implanted

  • The IOL procedure is typically done during cataract surgery and follows these steps:

    1. 1. Local anesthesia is applied for a painless experience.

    2. 2. A small incision is made to remove the cloudy natural lens.

    3. 3. The selected IOL is folded and gently inserted into the lens capsule.

    4. 4. The incision is self-sealing — stitches are usually not needed.

    5. 5. The entire process takes about 15–30 minutes, and patients go home the same day.

Recovery and Results

Most patients notice a significant improvement in vision within a few days. Full recovery may take a few weeks.

Aftercare includes:

  • Using prescribed eye drops to prevent infection or inflammation

  • Avoiding strenuous activities for a few days

  • Wearing protective eyewear if advised

  • Regular follow-up visits to monitor healing

With proper care, IOLs can provide long-lasting, stable vision.
