Introduction

Ptosis, also known as drooping of the upper eyelid, is a condition where one or both upper eyelids sag lower than normal. It can affect vision, appearance, and self-confidence. At Shreya Eye Centre, Dr. Rakesh Gupta provides expert evaluation and surgical correction for ptosis to restore both function and appearance.

Common Causes of Ptosis

  • Age-related Weakening: Most common in older adults due to stretching of eyelid muscles

  • Congenital Ptosis: Present at birth due to underdeveloped eyelid muscles

  • Neurological Conditions: Such as third nerve palsy or Horner’s syndrome

  • Trauma or Surgery: Injury or previous eye surgery can affect the eyelid muscles

  • Muscle Disorders: Conditions like myasthenia gravis can interfere with muscle strength

Symptoms of Ptosis

  • 1. Drooping of one or both upper eyelids
  •
  • 2. Obstructed or reduced vision (especially upper visual field)
  •
  • 3. Eye fatigue or forehead strain from trying to lift the lid
  •
  • 4. Uneven appearance of the eyes
  •
  • 5. Head tilting to see better
  •

Diagnosis and Treatment

Dr. Rakesh Gupta conducts a thorough eye examination, including visual field testing and eyelid measurements, to determine the severity and cause of ptosis. In some cases, neurological testing may be required.

  • Ptosis Surgery (Blepharoplasty or Levator Repair): Tightens or repositions the eyelid muscle to lift the lid

  • Frontalis Sling Procedure: Used for severe or congenital cases, utilizing the forehead muscle to lift the eyelid

  • Treatment of Underlying Conditions: If ptosis is due to nerve or muscle disease

At Shreya Eye Centre, Dr. Rakesh Gupta offers precise diagnosis and advanced surgical correction for ptosis. With compassionate care and modern techniques, we help you see clearly and feel confident again.
